Tony Abbott arrives to buy couple's second-hand fridge

You never know who is going to arrive at your front door when you sell something online.

But when a young Sydney couple accepted a bid from Gumtree user ‘Margie’ to buy their 3-year-old fridge – they definitely were not expecting former prime minister Tony Abbott to land at their front door.

Emily Hastings told BuzzFeed News that it “wasn’t until they showed to pick it up we realised that it was the former prime minister’s wife [Margie Abbott]”.

While this time last year he was the most powerful politician in Australia, on this occasion, “Tony was just a regular dude in a baseball cap,” she said.

Ms Hastings snapped a picture of her husband with Mr Abbott on Saturday, calling him “the proud new owner of our 3 year old Daewoo fridge”.

It was not a particularly special fridge – singular top freezer, 320 litres – perfect for keeping a few beers cool over the festive period.

“Margie said she thought the fridge would come in handy come Christmas time,” said Ms Hastings.
