The day Woolies and some random bloke won the internet

And the winner of the internet today is... this guy.

Followed closely in second position by whoever was manning Woolworths’ Facebook account for this exchange.

Jamie McGloin posted this account of a recent trip to the supermarket on the grocery giants official Facebook page. He brilliantly and skillfully set his pasta problems to the tune of an early 2000s pop hit.

"Yesterday I was searching for food to make mum's spaghetti. I was nervous, my knees were weak, my palms were sweaty and to top it off, I had a vomit on my sweater already," he wrote.

"To be honest, I was ready to drop bombs, but I kept on spaghetti what I wrote down. I feel I had one shot, one opportunity and I let it slip. I could have seized everything and I left with nothing but a brown onion and tomato paste. I lost myself in the spaghetti because I had spaghetti on my spaghetti already. Snap back to spaghetti. Oh there's goes more spaghetti!!

"So today I went back to purchase some spaghetti, instead of finding spaghetti in the packet, I found this.

"It was spaghetti!!!! What should I do with it? Should I return the spaghetti?"

The exchange has racked up about 10,000 shares and close to 100,000 cumulative likes so far.

Someone at Woolies picked up on the reference and hit back in fine style.

"Dear Jamie, you can do anything you set your mind to man," came the reply.

"The answer to your burning question is pretty clear... All you need to do is Lose Yourself in the spaghetti, the sauce, you own it. You better never let it go!

"You've only got one pan, don't miss your chance to cook, cuz dinner only comes once in a day.

"Yo."

Some are now questioning whether the exchange is a legitimate social media win or the work of a net-savvy marketing campaign manager.

Regardless, it is happy development for the Woolworths' marketing team who may also be behind 2015 biggest fail to date.

Their ANZAC Day campaign copped the opposite response when it was slammed for trying to profit from one of the greatest human tragedies the world has ever seen.

For those struggling to get the joke, rapper Eminem famously featured a verse in his 2002 hit Lose Yourself reading:

“His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy

“There’s vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti”

Users of the popular (and sometimes hilarious, often evil) message board 4Chan picked up on the line in about 2010 and a popular meme was born.

“Mom’s spaghetti” has become regularly used sauce material for the bait-and-switch meme in all corners of the web.

The internet’s various hiveminds, centering on Tumblr, Reddit and 4Chan, have never been ones to let a good joke die easily, and, as such, they’ve been recycling versions of this one for years.

Jamie McGloin can now lay claim to being the man who did it best though.

And Woolworths’ social media team are embracing the spirit of the internet meme whole-heartedly and are flogging this dead horse into the deepest depths of Hades.

Not that we’re complaining though. Nor is the enormous crowd gathering on Facebook to take part in the fun.

It all makes a pleasant change from the usual torrents of complaints and vitriol that too often inhabit social media comment threads.
