Viral TikTok reveals common sleep mistake: 'We hate this'

A sleep expert has gone viral after revealing a very common mistake people make at bedtime.

TikTok user @Levitex has detailed why sleeping on your stomach could be causing you problems and revealed the best position for your body for a prolonged period of time.

He explains sleeping on your stomach with a leg bent could be causing you more issues, with the muscles in your quadricep extended for your eight-hour sleep.

"Muscles don't like to be tense for long periods of time," he said.

He then twisted his neck and explained people don't watch TV in that position for hours on end, so "why would you spend hours upon hours twisting your neck [while sleeping]?".

"I think we've made it very clear that we absolutely hate this position," he said.

"But it's very easy to fix."

The TikToker then demonstrates how a person should be sleeping in bed, starting with rolling onto your side and stretching your bottom arm in front of you so your ears, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles are stacked on top of each other.

To add more comfort, the expert says a pillow can be nestled between the knees for better support.

"It's so easy," he said.

Many were shocked by the TikToker's revelation sleeping on your stomach could cause neck issues.

"Damn I always sleep like position one," a follower said.

"So that's why I get a sore back," another added.

Some of his followers however were not impressed by the suggested technique, with many saying it was "uncomfortable".

"I'd rather sleep in position one and risk back problems," one said.

"This is NOT easy," another commented.

"But it's not comfy like that ... I prefer the first position," a third added.

The sleep expert responded saying, "Comfy is just what we become used to – like slouching on a sofa".

One follower said the first position hurt their shoulder and after a while felt compressed.

"Usually means the pillow is too thin and unsupportive," the expert said.

"It should lift your head off the bed and fill the gap."

Others praised the TikToker for his advice, saying it had helped them cope with a number of issues like sciatica and scoliosis.

"I have been a stomach sleeper my whole life. Because of your TikToks I’ve been making a conscious effort to lay on my sides and my sciatica has got so much better," one follower said.

"I got two injuries waking up from the first position so now I sleep almost fully straightened up. Took me three months to get used to it but it's possible people," another commented.

"I have mild scoliosis and sleep with a pillow in between my legs almost every night. The most comfortable sleeping position for me," a third added.

"I started using the pillow in this position after being a stomach sleeper and now I can’t sleep any other way! So comfy," somebody else claimed.

A number of sleep hacks have been going viral on TikTok, with one sharing a technique to put you to sleep in "two minutes".

The TikToker, who goes by @YoungerYouDoc, shared his hack that involves rubbing two fingers on the inside of your wrist to help you nod off.

"All you’ve got to do is rub that spot on your wrist for like two to three minutes," he explains in the video.

YoungerYouDoc added in the comments, "The wrist spot is actually an acupressure spot that has come up in several studies."

According to Healthline, "Stimulating this pressure point is associated with quieting your mind, which can help you fall asleep."
