Soccer Great George Weah Inaugurated as President of Liberia

Crowds filled the fields and bleachers of the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia, Liberia, on January 22 to celebrate the inauguration of former soccer star George Weah.

In his inauguration speech, Weah pledged to tackle corruption, narrow the gap between rich and poor, and lead Liberia from “division to unity”.

Weah, who was FIFA World Player of the Year in 1995, is taking over from Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in Liberia’s first democratic transition of power since 1944.
