Melbourne Cup Critics Hold Picnic and Protest Across From Flemington Racecourse

Animal rights activists opposed to the Melbourne Cup held a simultaneous picnic and protests around Australia on November 7, with demonstration taking place directly across from Flemington Racecourse.

The Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses said that hundreds of horses were killed each year during and in the lead-up to the annual race held in Melbourne, which draws national attention. In an interview with The Guardian, the group said they have advocated for proper retirement plans for the horses and said one dies every 2.4 days due to overexertion.
