Gelada Baboon Baby Makes Debut at Bronx Zoo

A baby gelada made its public debut at the Bronx Zoo on Wednesday, October 4. The baby, only four weeks old, was born on August 30 and is still clinging to its mom.

The zoo is the only one in the US breeding geladas and is one of only two that have the species on exhibit. The zoo now has an adult male, three adult females, two juveniles and the baby.

The species, which is from Ethiopia, is sometimes called gelada baboons or bleeding heart baboons for the red patch of skin on their chests, but they are more closely related to mangabeys. They also feed primarily on grasses, which makes them unique among primates. Credit: YouTube/Bronx Zoo via Storyful
