Shoppers Snatch Up Baby Formula From Melbourne Woolworths

A group of shoppers were spotted scrambling for baby formula in a Woolworths in Glen Waverley, Victoria, as the store opened on the morning of September 14.

This footage shows the scene, which tallies with a second video from a Coles store in Toowong, Queensland, from September 12.

The author of the video told 9News that a group of people waited for the store to open every day and targeted discounted baby formula. He told Storyful that the public were “outraged” as “syndicates are essentially shipping this on the black market to China for a 300 percent mark up due to quality of the Australian product and recent cases of illness associated with Chinese local manufacturers of baby formula.”

Since China’s 2008 milk scandal in which thousands of babies were poisoned with melamine, as well as the deaths of several babies in 2004 from consuming fake formula, Chinese buyers have been sourcing milk powder abroad. That has led to some shortages in Australian stores, news.com.au reported. Credit: Anonymous via Storyful
