Artist Paints Mural of Gay Marriage Opponent Marrying Himself to Highlight Plebiscite Vote

Sydney artist Scott Marsh painted a mural of former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott marrying a bridal likeness of himself in Redfern, Sydney, between September 11-12.

Abbott, despite having a gay sister who wishes to marry her partner, is a vocal opponent of marriage equality.

A postal survey asking whether same-sex couples should be allowed to marry will be mailed to 16 million Australian voters from September 12, after the High Court ruled on September 7 that the government’s $122 million plebiscite was lawful. The results of the survey will be available on November 15. Credit: Scott Marsh via Storyful
