Barnaby Joyce Survives Vote to Step Down Amidst Citizenship Saga

A motion for Malcolm Turnbull to stand down the Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce in light of his dual citizenship was shot down on September 4, with Joyce himself casting the clinching vote.

The House of Representatives returned to session on Monday and questions regarding the row of dual citizens among the Nationals consumed much of the floor time. The opposition party hammered the Coalition government and demanded Joyce be stood down while he is before the High Court. It was revealed in August that the Nationals leader may be a citizen by descent of New Zealand, which could disqualify him from office.

The Labor Party argued while Joyce holds his ministerial titles, the integrity of the Parliament was compromised. The Prime Minister attempted to deflect the questions posed to him and eventually a division was called and defeated 73-74. Credit: Australian Parliament House via Storyful
