Chanting Protesters Call for Removal of University of North Carolina's Silent Sam Statue

Hundreds of protesters marched marched on the University of North Carolina to call for the removal of a Confederate statue from the campus on Tuesday, August 22.

This footage shows the protesters chanting “Hey hey, ho ho, this racist statue has got to go.” The Silent Sam statue can be seen surrounded by barricades and police.

At least two people were arrested in the protest, WRAL reported.

The statue, built in 1913 to commemorate alumni who had joined the Confederate States Army and died in the Civil War, has been a frequent source of controversy on the campus. A recent statement released by the University of North Carolina indicates that school leaders are considering removal of the monument, but can only act if a “‘building inspector’ concludes that physical disrepair of [the] statue threatens public safety.”
