Beaches Closed After Shark Attacks Seal Near Surfers

Thayer Wade filmed this dramatic close-up video showing blood in the water as a shark attacks a seal near surfers and swimmers at Nauset Beach in Massachusetts. Authorities closed the beach after the shark predation incident was reported.

Thayer told Storyful that he was sitting on the beach when he heard some thrashing in the water. He looked up and saw what appeared to be the dorsal fin and tail of a large great white shark thrashing in the water about 25 yards off shore not far from a few surfers.

He jumped up and grabbed his phone to capture it, running down to the edge of the water he saw the injured seal struggling in a pool of blood swimming toward the shore and surfers.

His uncle, Patrick O’Brien, who sprinted out of the water after he heard thrashing behind him, sprinted down the beach and back into the water to pull the surfers – two teenagers from New York – out. O’Brien later posted a photograph of the two surfers after they emerged safely from the water. Credit: Thayer Wade via Storyful
