Protesters Rally Against Police Shooting of 17-Year-Old Student

Crowds gathered at the People Power monument in Manila on August 21 to protest a violent Philippine police clampdown on drugs following the shooting of Kian Loyd Delos Santos, a 17-year-old student in Caloocan City, north Metro Manila, on August 16.

An Al Jazeera reporter on the scene said that about 4,000 people attended the protest.

Police said they chased Delos Santos after he drew a gun and fired at them, forcing them to fire back. However, Delos Santos’ family disputed this account. Delos Santos was reportedly shot multiple times in the head and an attorney speaking on behalf of the victim’s family said that autopsy results showed he was shot twice from behind.

CCTV footage also reportedly showed Delos Santos being dragged away by police officers, though police disputed the identity of the person shown in the video.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on August 21 that there was “a possibility that in some of police incidents there could be abuses,” according to Reuters. Credit: Twitter/HotCoco via Storyful
