California National Guard Drops Fire Retardant on Yosemite's South Fork Fire

The South Fork Fire burning near Yosemite National Park continued to grow on August 19, scorching more than 2,900 acres and remaining only 10 percent contained by that night.

Mandatory evacuation orders were in place for the town of Wawona, local reports said, as the fire approached.

This video, shot on August 14 but published on August 20, shows National Guard air crews dropping fire retardant on the blaze. Because of the significance of Yosemite, authorities said "minimal impact suppression tactics were being used, “using natural barriers such as rocks or streams, trails, and other minimal disturbance methods to contain the fire.” Credit: Maj.
