Anti-NAFTA Protesters March in Mexico City as Trade Agreement Talks Begin in Washington

As Mexican officials negotiated in Washington to save the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), thousands of farmers and union workers streamed through the streets of Mexico City on the afternoon of August 16 to protest the agreement.

This footage shows the marchers moving down Mexico City’s Avenida Juarez, waving banners and signs. According to El Diario, protests were organized throughout the city by groups such as the Mexican Electricians Union, the Union of Workers and the New Central of Workers.

Protesters against the 1994 NAFTA agreement – largely members of Mexico’s indigenous farming community – argue that it has hurt small businesses and done more harm than good to the local economy, according to Reuters. Donald Trump’s administration is currently in the midst of renegotiating the agreement, with the President threatening to scrap it altogether. Credit: Facebook/SÍ Odontología via Storyful
