"Call Before You Dig" Banner Plane Flies Over Outer Banks

Construction crews made progress – and attracted the attention of a chartered plane – on August 1 as they erected power poles by the Bonner Bridge in North Carolina’s Outer Banks in an effort to bring electricity back to the popular tourist area.

This footage shows the construction work as well as the chartered plane spotted over the site, carrying a banner which reads: “Call before you dig! 811 – The Podojil Family.”

The Outer Banks islands of Hatteras and Ocracoke have been suffering from a blackout since July 27, which was caused when workers from PCL Construction, a group working to replace the Bonner Bridge, accidentally damaged an underground transmission cable that provides power to the islands.

Tens of thousands have been evacuated from the region at the height of vacation season, The Washington Post reported. As of August 1, power to Hatteras and Ocracoke is expected to return in an estimated four to six days. Credit: Sam Walker/OuterBanksVoice.com via Storyful
