Defiant Venezuelan Opposition Leader Leopoldo Lopez Released From Prison, Under House Arrest
The Venezuelan government on July 8 announced the release from jail of opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez. He had reportedly been granted house arrest.
Lopez had spent almost three and a half years in prison after being convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2014 for inciting violence during anti-government protests.
Lilian Tintori, the activist and Lopez’s wife, said the decision filled her with hope, writing, in Spanish, “Today more than ever I raise my voice to demand the freedom of all political prisoners, and achieve justice and peace for our country force and faith!”
