Victoria has reported 989 locally acquired Covid-19 cases on Tuesday as thousands of punters are set to attend this year's Melbourne Cup.

The Department of Health reported a further nine deaths, taking the state's Delta death toll to 318.

There are 667 people hospital with Covid, 127 of whom are in ICU.

It is the first time since September 29 daily cases have been below 1000 and is a drop of more than 400 cases from the 1471 cases reported on Monday.

Active cases have also fallen under 20,000.

After running the race with empty stands in 2020 due to Covid, the Victorian Racing Commission will welcome punters back for the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday.

The crowd at Flemington Racecourse may be smaller than usual, at a Covid-safe limit of 10,000 people although only a small percentage of that number will be general admission.
