Billy Sperling, left, has been captured, but Thomas Smith and Geoffrey Pennell are still on the run.

Police say they have recaptured one of three men that escaped from a prison in regional Victoria.

Fugitive Taskforce detectives said Billy Sperling, 25, was back in custody after being arrested in Geelong on Thursday night, 350km south of the Beechworth prison he escaped on Tuesday.

Sperling was in prison for assault, drug-related, traffic and property offences.

Police are still looking for the other two men, Thomas Smith, 27, and Geoffrey Pennell, 34.

They were in prison for a range of property, traffic, burglary, damage and drug offences.

The trio are believed to have escaped from a window at the minimum-security facility, which is not enclosed by a perimeter wall.

They then allegedly stole a blue 1988 Mercedes sedan nearby, registration 1G13BT.
