Victoria records double-digit Covid cases as lockdown extension looms

Victoria has recorded another 11 new locally acquired cases of Covid-19 with none in quarantine throughout their infectious period.

The news comes as reports emerge the state's sixth lockdown could be extended past the initial seven days.

Health authorities said all of the new infections were linked to previously reported cases.

But senior Victorian government sources and epidemiologists told The Age this latest lockdown could last longer than planned as it could take weeks for everyone who tests positive to be in isolation during their infectious period.

In July, Victoria went into lockdown after 10 new daily cases and 26 active cases, with it taking 10 days for all new cases to be in isolation for their infectious period.

Victoria entered lockdown for the sixth time on Thursday night, just weeks after exiting the last one.

The state recorded 29 cases of Covid-19 on Saturday after recording six new Covid-19 cases on Friday.

Mystery clusters in Victoria

Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed on Saturday the surging clusters in Victoria had come from New South Wales, but was unsure how they started.

"There's about 20 per cent of cases where you can't get an exact match," he said in response to a question asking where the current cases have come from during Saturday's press conference.

"It's definitely New South Wales. It's definitely Delta. The question is to what extent is it actually linked to."

Mr Andrews said he was certain there were "more cases out there", urging anyone with symptoms to get tested immediately.

"If you've got symptoms, you have got to assume that you have got COVID, please come to get tested," he said.
