Melbourne couple 'lucky to be alive' after tractor crashes into home

A 30-tonne tractor has ploughed into a home in Melbourne's south-east, injuring a couple asleep in bed at the time.

A 34-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman were in their bedroom when the tractor crashed through the wall of their Lyndhurst home at around 12:45am.

The pair were taken to the Dandenong Hospital with minor injuries.

Sergeant Adam Ferguson from Victoria Police said they were extremely lucky to escape.

"It appears it's a tractor from a market garden around the corner, and possibly kids joy-riding and have lost control and it's gone into the front bedroom," Sergeant Ferguson told the ABC.

"It's quite surprising the two people have survived. They were lying in bed and the tractor pushed them up against the back wall.

"It's a big John Deere tractor that probably weighs 30 or 40 tonnes and it's pretty much ended up lying on top of them.

"It's one we haven't seen [before]."

A 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were asleep at the rear of the property but were not hurt.

Police believe the tractor, a 2009 green John Deere, may have been stolen and the driver jumped off before it hit the house.

Police searched the area with a tracker dog but could not find the driver.

The front of the house was extensively damaged.

It is now feared major structural damage will cause the house to collapse.
