‘Evil and selfish’: Tram sex assault victim speaks out about attack

A woman attacked by a sex predator on a packed Melbourne tram has bravely spoken out, telling of her fears he'll strike again.

The 20-year-old says she felt helpless and has called on a witness to come forward.

The woman has labelled her attacker "pretty evil and selfish" following the incident two months ago on a crowded 57 tram carriage.

She boarded outside the Queen Victoria Market late in the evening before her alleged attacker got on a few stops later and stood behind her before she was sexually assaulted.

"I think how crowded the tram was allowed him to do what he did and kind of take advantage of me not being able to turn around," she said.

A female tram passenger who saw what took place and tried to intervene before the man fled is regarded by police as being a key witness.

The suspect is believed to be of sub continental background with a solid build. He was wearing a black turban.

"The offending is incredibly concerning to us. The public transport system is a safe network," Detective Senior Constable Nicole Poynton said.

The victim has had to confront her fears over the assault every day for the past two months in order to carry on her lifestyle.

However, her concern is not just for her own wellbeing.

"If this man has done this to me and kind of thinks that he got away with it, it's the kind of offence that he could repeat," she said.

Anyone with information regarding the attacker is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
