Newman won't run for Melbourne lord mayor

Provocative AFL Footy Show host Sam Newman is no longer considering a tilt at the Melbourne lord mayor's job because he will be working overseas when it's time to nominate.

Mr Newman will be covering the US Masters for Channel Nine early in April, the same time nominations open for the by-election that will be held on May 12.

The vote was triggered by the departure of former lord mayor Robert Doyle, who quit amid sexual harassment allegations.

Mr Newman says he is "elated" to be covering the tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club, but is disappointed he can no longer run for office.

"I'm sure many will just see this as a fairly shallow attempt at (publicity) or a stunt, but it really never was," he said in a story published by The Age on Friday.

Earlier this month, outgoing Victorian Labor MP Jane Garrett also announced she had decided not to contest town hall's top job.

Property Council of Victoria executive director Sally Capp appears to be the frontrunner.

Nominations for the by-election open on April 5 and close at noon on April 10.

The US Masters runs from April 5 to 8.
