Hunt for man after woman followed and sexually assaulted in Melbourne street

Melbourne police are appealing to the public to identify a man after a woman was sexually assaulted on a street in Carlton last month.

A 25-year-old woman told police she was walking north on Swanston Street about 10.15pm on February 3 and a man followed her for several blocks.

She says the man approached her near the intersection of Lynch Street and Swanston Street, and sexually assaulted her before running off when she started screaming.

Investigators believe the man may have a distinctive gait and have released CCTV video and an image as they seek public help in identifying him.

The man is believed to be Caucasian, aged between 25-35 years, 180cm tall with a medium build and brown hair.

He was wearing a dark-blue button up shirt, light-colored jeans and dark shoes.
