Trio charged after Melbourne brawl

Three men have been charged with taking part in a street brawl in Melbourne which left a man with serious head injuries.

The trio from Western Australia were charged on Friday a day after the brawl broke out on Chapel Street about 1am on Thursday.

A 30-year-old man - named only as Ben - was in a stable condition at the Alfred Hospital after he was punched and kicked during the fight.

His family have started a fundraising effort to help his recovery.

"Ben is a loved partner to a wonderful woman and father to a beautiful son with another child on the way," said the fundraising page, which had collected more than $6000.

"He is currently in hospital with fears of serious brain injury and severe fracturing to the skull," the page read.

The brutal clash began outside a venue on Chapel Street before spilling onto the road where it disrupted traffic, detective Senior Constable Katie Johnson said.

"People have taken it upon themselves to start punching and kicking other males," she told reporters near the scene on Thursday.

The WA men, two aged 20 and one aged 22, have been charged with an array of offences including affray, behave in a riotous manner, intentionally cause injury and unlawful assault.

They have been bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on May 2.
