Gang holds meat cleaver to IGA worker's throat, slashes her hand in terrifying robbery

Three armed robbers are on the run after storming a Melbourne IGA supermarket and holding a meat cleaver to a female worker's throat.

Wielding a meat cleaver, kitchen knife and hammer, the gang stormed the Wyndham Vale IGA around 9.30 on Sunday night and started making demands.

A female employee, aged in her 50s, had her hands and arms badly slashed in the robbery while another employee had a long blade knife held to her throat.

Police rushed to the scene but the thieves, who were wearing hooded jumpers and gloves, had already made off with cigarettes and cash.

The injured employee was treated at the scene and is said to be in a stable condition.

Victoria Police have seized high quality CCTV footage as part of their investigation.
