Jane Garrett loses Vic pre-selection bid

Former Victorian Labor minister Jane Garrett has lost her pre-selection bid for the state's upper house.

The former emergency services minister has lost out to Australian Services Union branch secretary Ingrid Stitt in a tilt at Western Metropolitan Region pre-selection.

Ms Garrett announced in September she would leave her marginal seat of Brunswick at the 2018 state election.

She was seeking to replace outgoing upper house MP Khalil Eideh, under investigation over allegations Labor MPs used printing entitlements to pay for branch stacking.

Ms Garrett quit cabinet in 2016 rather than sign a controversial firefighters' union pay deal.

She holds Brunswick by 2.22 per cent but the Greens believe they have a fighting chance of snatching it.

Ms Garrett has been contacted for comment.
