Light plane makes emergency landing at a Melbourne airport

A light aircraft has made an emergency landing at a Melbourne airport, with all on board safely exiting the aircraft.

The plane believed to be a King Air, en-route from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, was seen circulating above Essendon Fields Airport for some time before making a skidding landing about 6.20pm Sunday.

The plane skidded when it hit the runway after reports its landing gear caused problems for the aircraft.

Footage from the scene shows a number of occupants running from the aircraft after a shaky landing.

Seven News Online understands all five occupants have been safely evacuated and are being checked over by paramedics.

They can be seen hugging on the tarmac following their dramatic exit.

The aircraft is being assessed by emergency crews.
