'Amateurs' smash into liquor store but forget tools to crack open secure cages

Two bungling thieves remain on the run after using a 4WD Ford Ranger to smash their way into a liquor store south east of Melbourne.

Police have described the early morning break in as amateurish, disorganised and panicky.

The two men scurried into the Cellarbrations liquor store just before 4am on Friday.

The culprits caused a lot of damage but made off with just $1000 and some cigarette lighters.

They were looking to steal cigarettes, but couldn't open the secured cabinets.

The pair forgot to bring tools, so opening the secure cabinets proved difficult.

They abandoned that idea and instead took the tills and were forced to settle for a small amount of cash and a few lighters.

Police say the thieves have a lot to learn when it comes to break ins.

"They've rammed the doors and parked nicely, you wouldn't normally do that if you were a professional. You wouldn't care," Detective Senior Constable Angela Butler told 7 News.

“They didn't have any tools that normal people in this sort of business have for getting what they want."

Locals at the quiet regional town of Koo Wee Rup, about a 90 minute drive south east of Melbourne, are shocked this sort of crime has happened.

Shae Frazer called the incident “disgusting.”

"Get a job, get a life, make your own money, buy the cigarettes," she said.

Both men were well covered and wore gloves, so dusting for fingerprints is almost impossible.

However, their vehicle of choice is distinct.
