Man who married 14-year-old Melbourne girl in Islamic ceremony jailed for 18 months

A man who married a 14-year-old girl in Melbourne has been handed a jail term but will spend only 13 more days behind bars.

Mohammad Shakir, 35, sobbed and shook as he was jailed for 18 months in the County Court of Victoria on Thursday but the sentence requires his release after serving one year and given time already spent in custody, he will be freed in 13 days and must be of good behaviour for six months.

Shakir pleaded guilty to marrying an underage person, a charge carrying a maximum five years' jail, after wedding the girl during an Islamic ceremony at a Noble Park mosque in September 2016.
