A young Melbourne man who was shot dead after running from gunmen likely knew his killers, police believe.

The 21-year-old was confronted by up to four men carrying weapons outside the house in Melbourne's north, where he lived with his parents.

It is believed a silver sedan waited in the area for up to 40 minutes before Mr Teriaki arrived home that night.

The CCTV footage shows Mr Teriaki running along Coronet Avenue with two men in hot pursuit, while a silver sedan follows along shortly afterwards.

He tips over a wheelie bin when he gets to the corner of Coronet Avenue and Atlas Street, causing one of the chasing men to fumble with the weapon he was carrying.

Police say Mr Teriaki may have been aware he was being targeted and it's possible he knew his attackers.

The car was found partially burnt out in the nearby suburb of Reservoir after it was stolen during a home invasion.

They have been looking at the victim's associates to try to discover who would want him dead.

"We are still trying to establish the motivation from this shooting," Detective Senior Sergeant Julian Horan told reporters on Wednesday.

"The family have no knowledge of anyone who would want to harm Anwar.

"We are still trying to piece together his movements prior to arriving home.

"There are some secretive aspects to his life we are trying to explore and he did have some involvement with police."
