Melbourne man discovers marriage equality message on his Subway receipt

Subway has had its say on the marriage equality debate, with a Melbourne man noticing a subtle message at the bottom of his receipt.

Steve King was ordering breakfast at the Cranbourne branch of Subway this week when he noticed the following message: "We believe in EQUALITY for all Australians.

"What about you?

"Vote YES in the Postal Survey.

"Do it because it's the right thing to do."

When the man posted a picture of the receipt on social media, opinion was divided.

Many welcomed Subway taking a pro-equality stance.

"I have never eaten at Subway and will have to change!", one user wrote.

Others took Subway to task for what one Twitter user called "getting on your high horse."

"Telling part of your customer base they won't be doing the 'right thing' isn't real smart," the man wrote.

Subway has told News Corp that each business was a franchise and the receipt was a reflection of the Cranbourne Subway owner's individual belief.

The company has not yet taken a public stance on the issue, unlike companies such as McDonald's and QANTAS.

In a statement Subway said: "We are committed to treating every person with honour, dignity and respect - regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender."
