Elderly man under guard after shooting at brothel, shooting self

An elderly man is under police guard in hospital after he opened fire at a Melbourne brothel before shooting himself in the stomach.

The man, in his late 80s, fired at a woman outside The Romantics brothel in Brunswick on Friday about 10am.

The woman fled inside and he fired again.

Both shots missed but those inside were terrified.

Neighbour Alex Burt said it was “pretty wild”.

“You get lots of seedy guys around here but nothing like that,” he said.

“It’s pretty intense.

“I don’t know what his deal is – must have been having a bad day.”

Police were able to identify the man and tracked him driving a gold Ford Falcon to the Calder Freeway before he crashed into a pole at Taylors Lakes.

It was then realised he’d shot himself in the stomach.

“We’re unable to establish exactly when (he shot himself) but it wasn’t when police were walking up to the car,” Superintendent Tony Langdon said.

“We’re grateful nobody from the public was hurt.”

The man was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition, but he was still able to speak with paramedics.

Seven News understands the man is thought to be a client of the brothel who developed an infatuation with one of the workers there.

Police will speak with him once doctors give the all clear and he’s expected to be charged.
