Children fall victims to concealed syringe in Coles supermarket

Two children have pricked their fingers on a syringe that police believe was deliberately planted in a suburban supermarket in Melbourne's outer north.

It is believed the syringe was deliberately hidden under a rail in the deli section of the Coles supermarket at Broadmeadows, at Pascoe Vale Road on Monday.

At 1.30pm a child appeared to be pricked by a syringe, which was hidden under a rail, police said.

The syringe was discovered an hour later after a second child pricked their finger, promoting their mother to alert police.

A Coles spokesperson confirmed the supermarket was working with police to investigate the incident, it said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.

"Our thought are with the customers affected by this event and their families.

"Out of respect for the privacy of the customers involved we cannot comment further at this time."

It is likely both of the children involved will be required to undertake blood tests to determine if anything has been transmitted from the syringes, with the results expected to take some time.

Investigators are urging people who noticed suspicious activity near the supermarket's deli section to contact Crime Stoppers.
