Mother claims school excluded autistic son from classes, told him to 'clean animal cages, pull weeds'

The mother of a child with autism has launched a Human Rights complaint, claiming her six-year-old was mistreated at his school.

Miranda Eyre said Gabrielle's behaviour deteriorated after just one term at Balnarring Primary School in the Mornington Peninsula and the family made the decision to enrol him elsewhere.

Ms Eyre claims the school failed to find an aide for her son and excluded him from classes.

She said the school also suggested he join the environmental program where students clean out animal cages and manage the gardens.

"[They] just didn't understand that's not a sensory program that's not what he needed. We point blank refused," Ms Eyre told 7 News.

"We want him to be in an inclusive learning environment where he can access his education and reach his potential".

Police Minister Lisa Neville said all the students take turns in "pulling out the weeds and cleaning the area."

The family have lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission.
