PETA offers $5000 reward to catch cruel roo killer

An animal rights group is offering a $5000 reward to find the people who killed a kangaroo, dressed it in leopard print and sat it on a chair near Melbourne.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has weighed into case, insisting such animal cruelty bears the hallmarks of serial killers like “Milwaukee Cannibal” Jeffrey Dahmer, the Boston Strangler and Ivan Milat.

"Animal abusers are cowards", PETA Australia Associate Director of Campaigns Ashley Fruno said.

"We're appealing to anyone with information about this cruel act to come forward so that the perpetrators can be put where they belong: in jail."

A dead kangaroo with three bullet wounds was found tied to a chair draped and holding a bottle of ouzo near Merda, Victoria, in what was been described as an “appalling and immoral” act of animal cruelty.

The slain roo was left on the roadside for shocked motorists to stumble upon.

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning released the disturbing image of the animal perched up on Plenty Road in hope of finding those responsible for the depraved act.

“This is appalling and immoral behaviour. The kangaroo had been shot at least three times prior to it being arranged in the chair," DELWP Senior Investigator Mike Sverns said on Tuesday.

"It would have taken some time to stage the kangaroo in that position on the side of the road.

"We are certain that someone would have seen something, given the public area and traffic flow of this main road."

The penalties for killing wildlife range from $7500 to $36,500.
