Bendigo mourns much-loved stablehand crushed by horse

Bendigo is mourning the death of a much-loved mother crushed by the horse she was training.

Donna Philpot has been described as a wonderful wife and mother and an incredible horsewoman.

The track worker and stable hand was killed during a training session this morning at Bendigo Racecourse.

She was doing barrier work when her horse stumbled and threw her onto the ground, and then rolled on top of her.

Paramedics tried to revive her, but she could not be saved.

The horse suffered injuries and was put down by a vet.

A former jockey, her husband Gus is a horse trainer.

They moved to Bendigo from Queensland several years ago to set up their stable.

WorkSafe officers have spent the afternoon at the Bendigo Racecourse trying to determine exactly what went wrong.
