Monkey bike killer to spend at least four years in jail over Melbourne mother's death

A mini motorbike rider who fatally struck a Melbourne mother of two at a shopping centre pedestrian crossing will spend the next four years at least behind bars.

Caleb Jakobsson was riding his self-built 'monkey bike' when he fatally struck Andrea Lehane, 34, on a pedestrian crossing outside a Carrum Downs shopping centre in September 2015.

She was thrown more than five metres, suffering catastrophic injuries. Ms Lehane was left brain damaged and her family was forced to switch off her life support two days later.

Jakobsson, 18 at the time, did not stay to find out what had happened to the nurse, fleeing to a friend's house.

The Victorian County Court has previously heard he was speeding on his motorbike, which had no front brakes, at the time of the crash.

He pleaded guilty in March to culpable driving causing death and failing to stop after the crash.

This morning, judge Jane Campton jailed him for seven years for taking the young mother's life.

"As a result of your negligent actions, a young woman, who should've had the rest of her life to look forward to, has met a traumatic death," she said in her sentencing.

"Her husband and young children were deprived of a wife and mother.

"Your offences had tragic and appalling consequences."

Judge Campton said Jakobsson knew he had hit someone and should have stopped after the crash.

"While I accept that you panicked, your actions were morally reprehensible and I denounce your conduct," she said.

The now 20-year-old was sentenced to seven years prison, with a non-parole period of four years. He was disqualified from obtaining a licence for four years after his release.
