'Window of shame': Shoplifters called out by Melbourne supermarket

A supermarket on Melbourne's outskirts is warning shoplifters they will be shamed in a very public way.

Ferntree Gully Foodworks has a sign warning would-be thieves they will end up in the "window of shame" for the whole community to see.

The shop's management is posting photos on its front window of those caught on CCTV taking items without paying, the Knox Leader reports.

"And please don’t forget to check your shoplifting video on Youtube!"

Foodworks spokesman Mick Guerin told the newspaper while it did not condone the public shaming, the stores were independently run.

"We don't condone this behaviour, however there are enormous costs associated with shop theft from supermarkets and the retail sector in general, which can ultimately lead to higher costs to consumers," Mr Guerin said.
