Woman fighting for life after fiancé allegedly set her on fire

A man is in custody after he allegedly doused his young fiancé with fuel and set her alight.

Nicole Evans is now clinging to life in the Alfred Hospital, with police holding grave fears for her survival.

The 20-year-old suffered burns to 50 per cent of her body on Monday night when a fire broke out in a backyard shed.

Police allege her fiancé, Matthew Davey, doused her in a flammable liquid and set her alight.

“We're conducting investigations not only to determine how that young lady sustained her injuries, but to establish and determine the extent of his involvement,” Detective Inspector Craig Joel told 7 News.

“I can confirm there were no family violence orders in place last night but there is a history of family violence.”

Ms Evans’ Facebook page said she fell in love with the man 14 years her senior by chance but stayed with him by choice.

For now Davey has been charged with grievous bodily harm and assault but charges could be upgraded in the horrible scenario where Ms Evans succumbs to her injuries.

He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody in Tasmania.
