Woman indecently assaulted at Australian Open

Police are investigating after a woman was indecently assaulted at the Australian Open.

A spokesman for Victoria Police said the woman was assaulted at the tennis by a man about 6.45pm on Wednesday.

The incident caused police to shut down Olympic Boulevard at Melbourne Park outside the tennis stadiums as "safety checks" were conducted.

"The prior and subsequent actions of the offender led to police conducting safety checks on Olympic Boulevard," police said in a statement on Thursday.

Spectators were delayed from leaving Rod Laver Arena and Hisense arenas and were told the boulevard was closed "due to a safety issue".

The checks were concluded about 10.30pm "with nil issues found".

No one was arrested and police said an investigation into the assault continued.

Superintendent Peter O’Neill said on Monday police would not tolerate anyone wanting to spoil the fun.

“The vast majority of attendees at the Australian Open are simply there to enjoy some world class tennis,” he said.

“But anyone caught causing trouble at the event can expect to be evicted or even face charges under the Major Sporting Events Act.”

Supt O’Neill said police and event organisers’ number one priority was the safety and security of all attendees.
