A Melbourne police officer was killed on her way to work, after a truck allegedly ran a red light and ploughed into her motorbike.

The truck driver allegedly failed to stop at at the intersection of Boronia Rd and the EastLink on-ramp in Wantirna just before 9am Thursday.

Police claim the officer was on her stationary motorbike at the time.

Victoria Police said the woman, aged in her 40s, was trapped under the truck and died at the scene, despite efforts by emergency services to save her life.

The truck driver, believed to be a man in his 30s, is assisting police with their inquiries.

All west bound traffic on Boronia Rd was diverted from Wantirna Rd and Mountain Highway, but reopened at 3.30pm Thursday.
