Victorian Police interviewed Cardinal Pell in Rome over sexual assault allegations

Victorian police interviewed Cardinal Pell in Rome over sexual assault allegations

Three members of Victoria Police travelled to Rome last week to interview Australian Cardinal George Pell in relation to allegations of sexual assault.

The cardinal, who has consistently said he is too ill to travel to Australia, participated in the interview voluntarily, the police said in a statement.

"As a result of the interview further investigations are continuing," the statement said.

"We are not prepared to comment further at this time."

The cardinal's office confirmed voluntary interview in a statement and reaffirmed the denials of the allegations.

"The Cardinal repeats his previous rejection of all and every allegation of sexual abuse and will continue to co-operate with Victoria Police until the investigation is finalised," the statement said.

"The Cardinal has no further comment at this time."

The allegations levelled at Australia's leading Catholic cleric date back to the 1970s and 1990s.

In August Victoria Police said charges against Cardinal Pell were being considered.

"We have received advice from the DPP and will now take the time to consider it," Victoria Police said in a statement.

"As with any investigation, it remains a decision for Victoria Police as to whether charges will be laid."
