'I killed you my darling': Wife accidentally runs over husband in driveway

An elderly woman is heartbroken after accidentally running over and killing her husband in their Melbourne driveway.

An ambulance was called to the Clayton South home but the man's injuries were too severe for him to survive.

Neighbours believe the woman, aged in her 70s, didn't realise the car was in drive when her husband asked her to rev the engine.

Andrew Boyadjian and his sister Alice lived next door to the couple for 40 years. They were first on the scene.

"He came in front of the car and he must have said to her rev.

"But she thought she was on neutral and she on drive, and whoosh, she just hit over him and drove over him," Mr Boyadjian told 7 News.

"She went down on her knees blaming herself and saying 'I killed you my darling. Don't die, don't die'."

While neighbours believe it was a freak accident, police will still conduct a thorough investigation to determine what led to the tragedy.

Acting Snr Sgt Janine Saunders told 7 News: "It appears a tragic accident at this stage. Police will investigate and come to a conclusion."

It is not yet clear whether police will press any charges.
