Truck driver rescued after slamming into West Melbourne rail bridge and becoming trapped

A truck driver has been rescued after spending almost two hours trapped when his vehicle struck a West Melbourne railway bridge and rolled over.

MFB Firefighters worked to free the driver who was trapped by his legs in the cabin of the fruit and vegetable truck about 10.20am on Wednesday at Lloyd St.

Paramedics treated the driver at the scene, following his rescue about 12.10pm. He has been transported to the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

Trains have been stopped on the rail line above the incident and the railway bridge will be inspected by Metro staff before any trains are allowed to use the line.

Police also blocked traffic in the area.

A heavy duty tow truck is on standby to remove the damaged truck.
