One dead, teen fighting for life after South Gippsland crash

A person is dead and a teenager is fighting for his life after a car crashed into a tree, split in two and burst into flames in country Victoria.

The unidentified person has died and a 17-year-old boy received life-threatening injuries after the driver of a vehicle crashed into a tree at Port Albert, in South Gippsland, Victoria, about 5.30am Wednesday, before bursting into flames, police say.

Paramedics were called to Port Albert-Yarram Road at 5.40am where the teenager went into cardiac arrest. He was able to be revived at the scene and was flown by air ambulance helicopter to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.

He suffered severe burns to his face and airways, alongside head, chest and leg injuries.

Police are yet to release the gender and age of the person killed.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash continue.

The scene remains closed to traffic and diversions are in place as police continue to investigate the fatality.
