Schoolgirl's alleged killer 'lived just 500m' from where body was dumped

The man charged with the murder of Melbourne schoolgirl Kylie Maybury, reportedly lived just 500m away from the spot where her body was found.

Kylie was just six-years-old when she was raped and murdered after being plucked from the street while she was going to get a pack of sugar on Melbourne Cup Day 1984.

The horrific crime took place while Kylie was walking the 150 metres from her home in Gregory Grove, Preston, to the shop in Plenty Road.

Her mother, Julie Maybury, came face to face with accused killer Gregory Keith Davies for the first time on Friday, June 10 as he appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court behind the glass.

News Corp reports the accused killer, known as Keith, lived at his parents house in Gordon Grove, Preston, for a number of years.

His mother was reportedly living in the home when Kylie was found dead.

A friend of the Davies family told News Corp: “The Davies family home is just around the corner from where Kylie’s body was left in the gutter."

Police allege Davies imprisoned and raped the six-year-old on November 6 and murdered her on November 7.

The now-elderly man, was arrested at his Waterford Park home on Thursday, June 9.

At his first court hearing Davies wasn't required to say anything and appeared emotionless. It was reported he sometimes glanced around the courtroom.

His lawyer said Davies needed medical attention for a pre-existing back and rib injury as well as high blood pressure.

They have urged two anonymous callers who provided information in the weeks and years after the death to come forward.

One witness, who called two weeks after the killing, said a white Holden Kingswood station wagon was involved.

A second person, who called in May 1997, nominated a person of interest.
