It is believed police, wearing rubber gloves, were removing notes of all denominations from the car, along with other items wrapped in white plastic bags.

Motorists spotted three police cars chasing a dark coloured BMW speeding on the wrong side of the Princes Highway at Flemington, saying the chase looked like a scene from the notorious video game Grand Theft Auto.

The car was found dumped outside a hotel in Downie St, in the city's CBD, at about 1:30pm.

Bullet holes were seen in the front windscreen, a witness said, and the driver was screaming hysterically, with blood dripping from his face.

"The windshield is broken, it looks like there were gun shots through the windshield (and) the gentleman was bleeding quite profusely," witness Geordie Barker told 3AW radio.

“It was absolutely mental.

“It was like a scene out of a movie."

Police intercepted the vehicle at North Melbourne and the man ran away during an attempted arrest, police confirmed.

“Police are currently responding to an incident and searching for a man after he fled from them during an attempted arrest in North Melbourne this afternoon,” Victoria Police spokeswoman Amelia Penhall said.

It has been reported the BMW drove three other vehicles off the road towards Footscray, however it is believed nobody was seriously injured.
