Manhunt for motorcycle rider who fired a gun during Melbourne CBD altercation

Police are on the hunt for a motorcyclist who fired a gun in Melbourne CBD Sunday night during an altercation.

The motorcycle rider was stopped at a red light at Lonsdale Street, waiting to turn right into Spencer Street about 7.25pm, when a shirtless man approached him and assaulted him, according to Victorian Police.

The rider fell to the ground and a fight broke out between the pair. During the commotion, the rider produced a hand gun and fired a single shot into the air before returning to his motorcycle and taking off south down Spencer Street.

The man who approached the rider, a 24-year-old Thai national living in Melbourne, was identified and charged with affray and assault-related offences.

Detective Sergeant Rob Milliken said police suspect he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

A search is on for the rider, whom police wish to speak with.

He is described as Asian, medium build, with short dark hair and was riding a 2008-2010 Suzuki GXSR 600 motorcycle. He was wearing a black, white and red leather riding jacket, dark pants and white shoes.

Police say the incident between the two men, who are not believed to know one another, appears unprovoked.

No serious injuries were sustained and there was no damage to property, Det Sgt Milliken said.

"We believe, given the location of the incident, and the time of the incident, that there are a number of witnesses that may be able to come forward and provide us with information."
