Woman dead after car carrying nine crashes in Vic

A passenger has died and eight people are injured after a car carrying nine people crashed in Melbourne's outer east.

The driver, thought to be a woman in her 30s, lost control of her car and struck a pole at Mount Evelyn on Tuesday evening, police say.

Officers were told a black 1998 Holden Commodore was travelling south along Hereford Road at about 6:15 pm.

A woman in her 20s died at the scene and the other occupants, four men and four women, suffered injuries and were taken to hospital.

The car had no registration plates.

The death takes Victoria's road toll to 192, two more than for the same time last year.
