How harmful is too much sitting?
Melbourne scientists are conducting a first-time study on the effect sitting down at work has on the brain.
A team at the Baker Institute has started examining how sitting down all day affects brain health and need volunteers to get involved.
Most workers spend their day in a sedentary position and studies have shown the physical effects of prolonged sitting, with links to heart disease and cancer.
CEO of the Heart Foundation Mary Barry said: “Healthier active workers are happier – they’re more productive and take less sick days.”
Some companies are encouraging standing desks for their employees.
Worker Rita Marigliani said: “It’s really nice to have the opportunity to stand up, stretch your legs and be in a different position for a little while.”
Researchers are focusing on how the brain is impacted, such as the ability to process information, and the strategies that can be used to enhance it.
Short-term benefits include improving productivity and concentration, and it could even ward off dementia down the track.
